some johannes’ words about his work for artcub records: “the title track “sawtooth novel” is my little hommage to the old sägezahn sound. there was a sägezahn renaissance in the rhein main area end of the 90’s, which was a huge influence for me when i went to clubs during this time. “counterbalance” has a rather subtle approach, the track lives from its effects and filtering. for the others tracks i want to express the more darker and dramatic side of techno, which is also well-equipped for the more excessive dancefloor hours.”

bxl003 is the third release of the artist-run brussels based label bxl. this third release by simon halsberghe features a collaboration with sagat (real name wiet lengeler), who previously released on the brussels’ label vlek and had his music included in the fabric mixes of both ben klock and joris voorn. the track is called the set-up and is a relentless sawtooth rave tune that finds it’s balance between the heydays of belgian techno and more contemporary ‘hi-fi’ attitudes towards functional yet idiosyncratic dance tracks. on the b-side space tom sounds is a deeper and more hypnotic trip with lush broad pads that provide a space for the mind as well as sonic pressure on the body. the last track, snared, takes things into breakbeat territory. with razor sharp snares and a pulsating baseline this track lives somewhere in the venn diagram overlap between rave, front 242 and an air raid siren going off.

at the tail-end of 2017, xl recordings reissued jonny ls seminal d&b album sawtooth on vinyl for the first time. a move that further cemented the records game-changer status, dj mag hailed the record as being still the future, while resident advisor said 20 years later, sawtooth still sounds like an outlier. so after showcasing this 20-year-old classic, xl recordings are today releasing a 12inch containing remixes of the most iconic track from the lp, piper. with efforts from peverelist, overmono, powell and zomby, these remixes go some way towards showing the influence jonny ls music still has on a wide range of contemporary electronic artists.

man power returned to his northern home for one last waltz. this is their joint offering for the esp institute. on side a, man power welcomes us with tistish, stepping slightly out of his comfort zone and employing a boxy breakbeat to create a dose movement. this contrasts his signature fatty bassline and together they establish a ground on which to stack layers of atonal square and sawtooth waves. about halfway through he introduces a massively seductive string lead and for the remainder of the ride this palette of sounds coalesce in dark orchestral beauty. on side b, man power’s cohorts last waltz deliver nee shitteru, a true stomper of a track complete with in-your-face toms and off-time percussion patterns, an intense driving acid line, and aggressive shamanic chanting. throw in some crash cymbals, sci-fi sound effects and a smattering of gamelan and it amounts to an overwhelmingly chaotic and psychedelic trip. these two songs will have you speaking in tongues.

taking proto sites back to the hypnotic hardware methods of earlier releases like lutto lento, s olbricht and sentry, suspension ep makes things kaleidoscopic, raw, repetitive and asynchronous. high gain perishing delays gradually cook your brain while flerbing sci-fi reverberations crawl across the atmosphere. this five-track cassette mantra has a furry analogue outer crust barely containing its computer controlled acid consciousness. each tune has its own density and unique stripped back bass structure which carries the whole thing along, absorbing strange hissy elements as it rocks downstream. breaking through the mantle, sawtooth voices murmur foreign incantations, swinging loopy phrases come and go jamming their way into repetitive bass squelches all pressure cooked to the extreme.

when messiaen set out to transcribe birds songs as models for his compositions, he couldn t have predicted that by now wild birds would have started to learn mobile phone ringtone patterns. for a system of objects, raudive aka oliver ho maps an obliquely constructed world in which you lose all certainty of what is nature and what is design. raudive celebrates dance and auditory scenes as rituals, employing our surroundings as sources of ahistorical found sound - primitive technologies used to reach magickal states. a drum machine and a wooden stick, a sawtooth-shaped electric current and a split rock all turn into empirical objects of the same class, without a definite past or a predictable impact.
